US-based DIY chain Home Depot has begun an investigation into unusual activity related to its customers.
Prominent security blogger Brian Krebs raised the alarm after a large number of stolen card details were posted on an underground forum.
Home Depot has confirmed that they are working with banking partners and law enforcement. In a statement, they said, “If we confirm that a breach has occurred, we will make sure customers are notified immediately. Right now, for security reasons, it would be inappropriate for us to speculate further.”
Home Depot shares fell by 2% on Tuesday.
The US is one of the most vulnerable countries for credit card theft due to the dated technology used in stores. There are plans for US stores to use chip-and-pin as early as next year, however, which will significantly improve the security of customer’s data.
