Millions of US government workers hit by data breach

USA ranked the most cyber secure countryThe Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has suffered a cyber attack that affects millions of government workers.

The OPM confirmed Thursday that almost four million current and past employees have been affected.

The breach could potentially affect every federal agency, officials said. It’s also been said that security clearance information on government officials could have been targeted.

Those potentially affected are being contacted and are being offered free identity theft protection services.

Sen. Susan Collins, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said it was thought to have originated in China.

I’m not going to waste time speculating on a Chinese origin because jumping to conclusions is never a great idea.

“The FBI is conducting an investigation to identify how and why this occurred,” the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement Thursday. “DHS is continuing to monitor federal networks for any suspicious activity and is working aggressively with the affected agencies to conduct investigative analysis to assess the extent of this alleged intrusion.”
