There has been another data breach at a large hotel chain – this time, it’s Starwood Hotels and Resorts.
In a statement posted on its website, Sergio Rivera, president of the chain, announced a malware intrusion that “affected some point of sale systems at a limited number of Starwood hotels in North America”.
Rivera continued: “We have been working closely with law enforcement authorities and coordinating our efforts with the payment card organizations to determine the facts.”
And, of course, the usual phrase was included: “We want to assure you that protecting the security of our customers’ personal information is a top priority for Starwood.”
Affected data includes:
- Cardholder names
- Payment card numbers
- Security codes
- Expiration dates
The company has said that those who shopped at restaurants and gift shops, and used other point of sales systems at affected Starwood locations are at risk. However, my advice would be that if you used your card at any Starwood location, then you should stay vigilant and keep an eye on your statements.
